Jun 21, 2017  It is convenient for the users to manage their partitions without the third-party partition software. Therefore most of users choose to use the tool. But you may face some problem. For instance, the Extend Volume greyed out in windows 10 when you use the tool to extend partition to solve low disk space warning problem. If you extend a logical drive beyond the free space available in the extended partition, the extended partition grows to contain the logical drive. For logical drives, and boot or system volumes, you can extend the volume only into contiguous space and only if the disk can be upgraded to a dynamic disk.

We have a server that is running on hardware RAID1. We've needed to add additional disks, but unfortunately the raid controller doesn't support RAID10. States the following:'You cannot extend the current system or boot partitions.' Martin,That is incorrect, that is not what the article says.

That is paraphrasing the beginning of a paragraph that started to describe the ' extend' value. And had you continued to read the remainder of the paragraph you would have learned that,'. A dynamic simple or spanned volume can be extended to any empty space on any dynamicdisk. Using this command, you can extend an existing volume into newly created space. If the partition was previously formatted with the NTFS file system, the file system isautomatically extended to occupy the larger partition. No data loss occurs. If thepartition was previously formatted with any file system format other than NTFS, thecommand fails with no change to the partition.' So to be correct, per your own article reference, you would have had to say something to the effect of 'Here's a Microsoft technet article that illustrates how to extend your dynamic volume onto additional dynamic disk.

((hyperlink to article here)).' However, the article should maybe be a little clearer about HOW one would need to go about accomplishing the task. Through the GUI is not the way to get it done with dis-contiguous space even if they peices are all on Dynamic simple disks. Sadly enough.Just above the description section are instructions on how to use the utility DISKPART to accomplish the task from a CLI (Command Line Interface). I recommend going that approach toward achieving the goal. And while this thread has begun to age somewhat, it appeared for me when I went searchingfor answers and this is still relevant info for anyone also searching. So there you is, enjoy.

Can't Extend Volume Past 2tb

How do I extend my C drive? From:You can add more space to existing primary partitions and logicaldrives by extending them into adjacent unallocated space on the samedisk. To extend a basic volume, it must be raw or formatted with theNTFS file system. You can extend a logical drive within contiguousfree space in the extended partition that contains it.I can extend my D drive, but not C. I suspect the problem is that the unallocated space is not 'adjacent', but I have no clue how to change that. How can I solve this?
